Product details

Rio Grande tomato produces high yields of large red pear-shaped tomatoes. They are thick and meaty, with a flavor that is mildly sweet with a little of that old fashioned tart tomato flavor. One of the best paste tomatoes to grow in hot climates and will withstand extremes in temperature, both hot and cold. An excellent choice for beginner gardeners. Highly disease resistant.

Tomato seeds can be started indoors.

Start seeds inside 8 weeks before the last frost date.

Plant seeds 1/2" deep in pots with growing mix and place on a warm seedling mat or in a warm area that is 70 to 85 degrees with bright light. Tomato seeds prefer relatively warm temperatures to germinate and grow quickly. Seedlings should emerge from the soil in 5-10 days. After 8 weeks, when the outdoor garden soil has warmed, harden off the seedlings and transplant them 24" apart in rich soil and full sun.

Rio Grande Tomato Seeds are known for producing a high yield of large, pear-shaped, deep red tomatoes. This variety is particularly popular among gardeners and farmers due to its versatility and ability to thrive in hot climates.

Key Characteristics:

Plant Description: Rio Grande tomatoes are determinate plants, meaning they grow to a certain height and then stop, producing all their fruit at once. The plants are vigorous and bushy, making them ideal for both home gardens and commercial farming.

Fruit Description: The tomatoes are large, blocky, and pear-shaped, with a deep red color. They typically weigh between 80-100 grams each and are known for their meaty texture and firm flesh.

Maturity: Rio Grande tomatoes take approximately 77 days to mature from transplanting. This makes them a mid-season variety, providing a good balance between early and late harvests.

Disease Resistance: This variety is resistant to common tomato diseases such as fusarium wilt and verticillium wilt, ensuring a healthy and productive crop.

Growing Conditions:

Climate: Rio Grande tomatoes thrive in hot climates and are well-suited for regions with high temperatures. They can be grown in both irrigated and rain-fed conditions.

Soil: They prefer well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Adding organic matter to the soil can improve its fertility and structure.

Spacing: Plant the seeds 18 inches apart in rows that are 24-36 inches apart. This spacing allows for adequate air circulation and reduces the risk of disease.

Watering: Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods. However, avoid overwatering as it can lead to root rot and other issues.

Culinary Uses:

Rio Grande tomatoes are highly versatile and can be used in a variety of culinary applications. They are excellent for making sauces, pastes, and juices due to their meaty texture and rich flavor. They can also be used fresh in salads, sandwiches, and salsas.

Nutritional Benefits:

Tomatoes are a rich source of vitamins A and C, potassium, and antioxidants such as lycopene. These nutrients are essential for maintaining good health and can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Rio Grande Tomato Seeds are an excellent choice for gardeners and farmers looking for a reliable, high-yielding tomato variety that performs well in hot climates.
